Overdraft Privilege

Why do we offer Overdraft Privilege?

At times, unanticipated expenses or unforeseen problems can leave you with too little cash in your checking account. Having a check returned due to insufficient funds can be an uncomfortable experience. That is why we offer a special Overdraft Privilege for Tri Counties Bank checking account customers.

How do I obtain Overdraft Privilege?

Overdraft Privilege requires no action on your part. You do not have to sign anything. Your Overdraft Privilege amount will be automatically assigned based on your account type.

How does Overdraft Privilege work?

As long as you maintain your account in good standing, (defined as making regular deposits and bringing your account to a positive balance at least once every 30 days) Tri Counties Bank will honor overdrafts up to the Overdraft Privilege limit on your account. If you use the Overdraft Privilege, you should remember the Bank’s standard non-sufficient funds fee, also called “NSF” fee, for each transaction will be deducted from your account. The Bank will notify you by mail when an overdraft occurs. No interest will be charged on the overdraft balance.

How do I know when I use the overdraft limit?

You will receive an overdraft notice in the mail each time items are paid. The notice will show the check number, amount, and the NSF fee. You should subtract total fees from your checkbook.

I have two checking accounts. Can I get Overdraft Privilege on both?

Yes. If you have multiple accounts for your household, you may have a limit on all eligible accounts.

What if I go beyond my Overdraft Privilege limit?

Overdrafts above and beyond our established Overdraft Privilege limit may result in a check or checks being returned to the payee. The normal NSF fee will be charged per check and assessed to your account. An NSF notice will be sent to notify you of our actions.

What are some of the ways I may have access to my Overdraft Privilege?

Generally, you may access your Overdraft Privilege through:

  • Checks and other debits cashed at teller windows
  • Debit Card
  • ATM transactions
  • ACH debit transactions
  • Checks issued to a third party
  • All transactions that currently are honored through your account

How quickly must I repay my Overdraft Privilege?

You should make every attempt to bring your account to a positive balance as quickly as possible. If you are not able to do so, you will receive a letter from Tri Counties Bank informing you of the situation and your options. If, after a period of time, your account has not been brought to a positive balance, we will have no option but to close your account and take other steps to recover funds.

What is the difference between “current balance” and “available balance” when I access my account?

Because your overdraft privilege limit may be included in the available balance printed on your ATM receipt or stated as “overdraft privilege or credit memo” when you call our 24-hour Telephone Banking center, we believe it is important for you to understand the difference in these two balances.

Current Balance - The balance in your account at the close of the previous business day.

Available Balance - Funds available to you, including your Overdraft Privilege limit, any deposits, withdrawals, or Automatic Cash Reserve (ACR) that have been posted to your account. Items may continue to post to your account throughout the day.

What does my Overdraft Privilege cost?

There is no cost associated with this privilege. As stated previously, you should keep in mind that you will be charged an NSF fee for each check paid under the limit.

How soon can I use my Overdraft Privilege?

All personal checking account holders that have been opened for at least 60 days will be automatically assigned the Overdraft Privilege based on the account type. If you are a new active account holder, you will be able to use the Overdraft Privilege 60 days after the account is opened.
